Banks: the dividends keep on coming
Arian Neiron, Managing Director
CBA shareholders in search of increased dividends have cause for celebration as CBA’s first half earnings result was pleasing to say the least. Dividend per share (DPS) was up 12% at $1.83. Bank yields have been and continue to be the talk of the town for dividend hunters though some investors don’t realise how high. Investors that don’t have a good allocation to banks in their portfolio are missing out. This may be a once in the investment cycle opportunity.

Gold shares: can they sparkle in 2014?
by Russel Chesler, Director, Investments & Portfolio Strategy
It is no revelation that John Paulson and George Soros, two widely known hedge fund billionaires and large holders of Gold bullion felt the pain of 2013, with the yellow metal plummeting 28%. With Gold bullion forming an important base, will their equity counterparts, the Gold shares, be the point play that will see Gold regain its sparkle with 2014 being the golden opportunity for mean reversion of the gold sector?

Purpose drives human behaviour. Ask investors why they invest and you will get a range of reasons: to save for a deposit on a house, to fund one’s retirement or to simply get richer. Whatever their motivation, investors have an outcome in mind.

Which bank?
by Arian Neiron, Managing Director
Which bank? The Australian banking industry is highly concentrated. Some would say it is an oligopoly. All the banks have made big profits and over time all of their share prices have increased considerably. People often consider them highly correlated to one another with little opportunity to pick one bank that will perform better than its peers.

2013 saw the Australian equity market, as measured by the All Ordinaries Index, achieve a return of 19.7% with the December quarter only returning a modest 1.0%. Despite many global events impacting equity markets, particularly the threat of a U.S. Government shutdown and the Federal Reserve Bank’s decision to cut stimulus, both U.S. and European equity markets also performed strongly...

Can you believe it? The end of the year is around the corner with only 25 trading days before the end of 2013. Is a Christmas bonus now on the cards?

Property Securities: the forgotten yield play
by Russel Chesler, Director, Investments & Portfolio Strategy
Listed Property Trusts (LPTs), as we used to call them, were in portfolios because of their low correlation with the growth assets. While we expected the growth assets to go up in the long term we were aware that the short term could be very volatile. These property assets were expected to stay in a narrower range while delivering a stable stream of income...
