VanEck to list Australia’s first quantum computing and the lowest-cost global semiconductor ETFs

July 2026

Australian investors will gain access next week to the technologies and materials underpinning the next computing revolution, with VanEck launching three new ETFs spanning rare earths and strategic metals ex-China, Australia’s first dedicated quantum computing ETF and the market’s lowest-cost global semiconductor ETF.

For VanEck, the investment case extends well beyond any single technology.

  • Quantum computing is moving from scientific research towards commercial reality, creating a new frontier in computing with the potential to solve some of the world's most complex problems.
  • Realising that potential will require a new generation of advanced semiconductors, as artificial intelligence and quantum computing drive unprecedented demand for computing power.
  • Supplying that computing power depends on secure access to the rare earths and strategic metals that underpin the technologies of tomorrow.

The trifecta launch also comes as Australia's ETF market enters a new phase of growth, with investors becoming increasingly selective about the ETFs they own, who the ETF provider is and importantly seeking more targeted exposure to long-term structural trends. VanEck forecasts that the number of ASX-listed ETFs could reach 530 and industry assets exceed $400 billion by the end of 2026.

“The next generation of ETFs won't be defined by the themes they claim to capture, but by how precisely they capture them. Investors are after genuine exposure to the structural forces shaping tomorrow's economy rather than broad interpretations of a headline theme,” says Arian Neiron, CEO and Managing Director of VanEck Asia Pacific.

“AI has evolved from a software trend into one of the largest physical infrastructure investment cycles in history. It has become a global race for computing power, semiconductor capacity and secure access to the strategic materials that advanced technologies cannot function without,” Neiron said.

"The next wave of value creation won't necessarily come from the companies making the headlines. It will come from the technologies and materials making those companies possible."

Against this backdrop, VanEck is launching three ETFs on 6 August designed to give Australian investors targeted exposure to the industries building the architecture of tomorrow's economy:

  • VanEck Quantum ETF (ASX: QNTM)
  • VanEck Global Semiconductor ETF (ASX: SMHG)
  • VanEck Rare Earth and Strategic Metals ex China ETF (ASX: RESM)

It is expected that AI capital expenditure (CapEx) spending will top US$765 billion this year1 building AI infrastructure, driving demand for advanced semiconductors and the rare earths and strategic metals that underpin the entire supply chain.

At the same time, investment in quantum computing start-ups reached US$12.6 billion in 2025, signalling that the next wave of computing is moving rapidly from theory towards commercial reality.

This launch builds on VanEck's long-standing global expertise across these sectors. The firm manages the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (NYSE: SMH), the world's largest semiconductor ETF, and has managed one of the world's longest-running dedicated rare earth ETFs since 2010 in the VanEck Rare Earth and Strategic Metals ETF (NYSE: REMX). VanEck also manages a UCITS quantum computing ETF in Europe, while QNTM will become Australia's first ETF dedicated to the global quantum computing ecosystem.
